Several airlines fly between the US and the United Kingdom, including Virgin Atlantic and our transatlantic partner, Delta Air Lines. The cheapest month to fly to the UK varies depending on your departure city and demand, but January and February are often among the best-value times to travel. You may also find lower fares during late fall and early spring, outside major holidays and school breaks. Being flexible with your dates is the best way to spot a brilliant deal.

A nonstop flight from the US to the UK usually takes around 7 to 11 hours, depending on where you’re flying from. Flights from the East Coast are generally shorter, while journeys from cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco take a little longer. Whichever coast you’re leaving behind, our food, drinks and inflight entertainment will help the time fly by.

You can fly to the UK from major US cities including New York, Boston, Atlanta, Washington, DC, Orlando, Miami, Tampa, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. The best UK airport depends on where your adventure is taking you. London Heathrow is ideal for exploring London, southern England or connecting to destinations across the UK and Europe. Manchester is a great gateway to northern England, while Edinburgh puts you in the heart of Scotland. Virgin Atlantic’s nonstop US flights primarily arrive at London Heathrow, with other UK destinations available on selected routes and connecting services.

US citizens visiting the UK for a vacation usually do not need a visa for stays of up to six months. However, you’ll normally need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, known as an ETA, before you travel. Every passenger needs their own ETA, including children, and different requirements apply if you’re travelling to work, study or stay for longer. Always check the latest UK government guidance before departure.

Your baggage allowance depends on the Virgin Atlantic ticket you choose. Economy Light includes hand luggage but no checked bag, while Economy Classic and Delight include one checked bag weighing up to 23kg. Premium includes two checked bags of up to 23kg each, and Upper Class includes two checked bags of up to 32kg each. Always check your booking before packing, particularly if part of your journey is operated by another airline.
